About

My name is Dmitry Alekseenko. I work in IT, and I build Ironpad — a workout log for iPhone. This site and the calculators on it are mine too.

How it started

Not with an app idea. I started training on my own and paying attention to what I ate, and within a few weeks all of it had moved onto paper: the training plan, a food diary where I wrote the same meals out again and again, body measurements. Then I had to turn those pages into something I could read — is anything improving, where is my weight going, are the working weights moving up. That is where paper gave up.

I could not find an app that kept all of it in one place, so I built one.

I use it myself

Ironpad is the app I open at every session. That is the only reason it has no ads, no subscription and no sign-up: I do not want any of that in an app I use myself. Everything stays on the phone and is not sent anywhere.

Where the calculators came from

From the margins of the same notebook. One rep max, barbell plates, the warm-up ramp, daily calories, strength standards — these are the sums I did by hand until I got tired of doing them. Every one of them runs in your browser: nothing goes to a server, nothing asks you to sign up, and there is nothing to pay for.

Under each calculator I have written out how it works and where the formula comes from, with the author and the year it was published. That is deliberate: checking beats taking my word for it.

What I am not

I am not a coach, a dietitian or a doctor. The calculators use published formulas, but a formula is an estimate fitted to an average person, not advice for you specifically. That matters most for calories: if you are pregnant, managing a medical condition or dealing with an eating disorder, the right numbers come from a doctor, not from a web page.

Feedback

I would be glad if the app turns out to be useful to someone other than me. Kind words are welcome; so is criticism, as long as it is specific — that is the kind anything useful gets built from. Write toHello.appdesk@gmail.com, I read all of it.
